Island Hopping 2019: Coron, Philippines

I have been to the Philippines 4x in my life and the last two times were these past two years.  Most of my family is in the metro Manila area (the country’s capital) or north of the city.  The best beaches in the Philippines are just a short plane ride away.  On this trip, I visited Coron.

Where?

Coron is a town that part of a series of islands called Palawan. I flew into the local airport, Busuanga, from Clark Airport, which is right north of Manila. Busuanga is a super small airport that’s 30 minute drive from Coron.  We took a shuttle to our hotel which was 150 pesos a person ($2.87 USD).

The view from the plane!

We stayed at the Vienna Hotel, which was close to the entrance to Mount Tapyas. I didn’t love our stay at the Vienna Hotel (our floor was super sticky) but it wasn’t that expensive.

What to do?

Mount Tapyas

Me and my sister “climbed” to the top of Mt. Tapyas at sunset which has amazing views. Even though we climbed the stairs all the way to the top (750 steps and it took us maybe 15 minutes), it was hot (85 degrees) so it can get pretty tiring.  However, the views are absolutely worth it.

Exploring the town

There aren’t any taxis so you’re going to have to take a tricycle.  It’s the preferred method to get around but there’s plenty of great places to eat and spas and shopping by the water.

This is a fancy tricycle! Most of them don’t look that nice!

Island Hopping

This is what Coron is probably known for….the vicinity to gorgeous islands, beaches and great swimming. Honestly, I have no idea where or what we booked but essentially all the BOAT tours are broken down to either 1) the local sights like twin lagoon, Kayangan Lake or 2) beach island hopping that are 90 to 120 minutes to various beaches like Malcapuya Island or Banana Island.

I did both! Will say that the lunch that was included were both amazing. The staff cooks the food right on the back of the boat so it’s super fresh.

I loved everything about these day trips except the wood boats. They look very cool but felt like they’d fall apart immediately. As soon as I got on the boat and they told me it was two hours on the boat to the beach, I wanted to jump off.

Also, another great thing about these day trips are the amount of snorkeling and swimming you can get in one day! The water is warm and clean.  I’ve snorkeled before but I had never seen a coral reef before until this trip.
