Virtual Coffee Date: April 2019 – The Big 3-0

I love April. Not just because it’s one month closer to summer but also because it’s my birthday month! (Tax day baby!!). April is always just a really crazy month for me. And this year was no exception. Here are some highlights:

If we were having coffee today, I’d tell you that…I turned 30 and I achieved my goal of not having a full blown life crisis about doing so. I graduated college two years early and seem to be the baby in a lot of friend groups. I’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly of turning 30. I did not want to go through that. It’s just a number. Plus I may have not been freaking out because I’ve done every single thing I set out to do in my 20s.

Anyways, I started birthday celebrations a week and half early in Mexico. Then continued with brunch the day before my birthday and hiking the day of.

It was raining on my birthday but we decided to hike anyways. We drove up to Bull Hill, which is right north of Cold spring and south of Breakneck ridge, to hike. It’s a great hike if you want views without a strenuous breakneck ridge type hike.

If we were having coffee today, I’d tell you that…I really needed a vacation. We went to Mexico (highlights here). Although it seems like I’m flying off to some place every few months, I really needed it. I’ve been so stressed at work that I’ve started grinding my teeth again. May not seem like such a big deal but the last time I did it was bar prep (you know that life altering, career altering beast of an exam I took almost two years ago).

It was so good to get away and regroup. I really needed it.

If we were having coffee today, I’d tell you that…I finally went to visit my law school wife in Philly. Philly has always had a special place in my heart for all the crew races I’ve competed in when I was in high school and college. Plus my first marathon was in Philly!

The last time I was in philly was for the Rock n’Roll Half Marathon 3.5 years ago. Basically we hung out and tried all the good food! My favorite was Miller’s Twist in Reading Terminal.

Looks ok but actually tastes amazing

It wasn’t completely set up but the Chinese Latern festival was cool. I think it technically just started this month. We went during the day but it would be pretty amazing to go at night.

Another highlight of philly was running along the river down boathouse row. I ran 10 miles, which is my longest run for the Flying Pig Half Marathon (which I’m doing tomorrow!).

If we were having coffee today, I’d tell you that…I bought a Citibike annual membership, which seems extravagant when I have an amazing 4-year-old hybrid Trek bike. Except I tried it for a day and liked it! The bike (it’s harder to maneuver than any other bike) but the app is pretty cool. Throughout the summer and fall, I biked most places but I just found it annoying if it was raining on the way to work, but sunny on the way back, I’d just get annoyed that I didn’t bring my bike with it. It’s nice not to worry where to lock up my bike or if my lights would get stolen. Plus I like that I can see my bike history.

This month of May, I’m looking forward to this half marathon (also slightly dreading the pain I’ll be in – I haven’t done a half in over a year and half!), my trip to Ecuador, getting back to climbing (hopefully outdoors!) and just more outdoor time!
